Question #23
With Lena's wedding this weekend I thought it would be fun to hear about some of the weddings of old. Especially the aunt's and uncle's. (Any memories you have of Gladys'and Byron's would be appreciated too.) If you send pictures I will post them too. So, here is the question but feel free to share any memories from being an 'attendee'.
Describe your wedding day. Where did you get married? Why? Who came? Did you have a honeymoon?

One of my favorite wedding memories from our wedding was the dinner with the families the night before. Everybody that came from out of town came to the church (Sid's family and mine) we got the gym ready and prepared food for the next day and had spaghetti dinner that night together. I remember what a relief it was to have things finally coming together that I had been planning for what seemed like forever. Plus it was a lot of fun. I remember Bob in the kitchen making silly puns about vegetables with Evan and Grandma chopping with a huge knife she had carried on the plane (that wouldn't happen these days). Marilyn made the entry way more beautiful than I ever imagined it could be. Sid's mom worked tirelessly to clean arbors I had borrowed from work that had mold all over them (what was I thinking!!). I think for me it was a symbol of what I hoped for my marriage. All the support and experiences from both of our lives coming together to make a better life together (I hope that isn't too hokey but it is true).
When Jesse and I decided to get married (Jesse decided because I told him we were getting married), we didn't have a lot of money and neither did my parents. So, we decided to elope. We got online and planned our wedding and bought our rings in just two weeks. I told my family we were going to Moab for my birthday. I called my mom, Jennifer, from the motel and asked her if she would be upset with me if I were in Las Vegas to get married. She said, "No, not at all, if that's what you want to do." I said, "Well, we're not in Vegas." (Because my dad jokingly told me on a vacation in Vegas when I was a teenager that he would disown me if I got married there). My mom said, "Where the 'heck' are you?" "I'm in Lake Tahoe, and we're getting married on Friday. You can come if you want, but it's OK if you don't." It was Wednesday evening. My parents immediately got online and booked a flight, car, and hotel (so much saving them money). My mom did my make-up and hair and brought me a dress my grandma, Sonja, had sent. We got married on the mountain over looking the lake by a free-spirited, female minister. Afterward, my parents took us to a really fancy dinner at Cesar's Palace. It was the first time I had chocolate covered strawberries! I was hoping to make it back for our fifth anniversary. Hopefully it will happen before our tenth.

One of my good friends in high school was a hair stylist and she got up at four in the morning of my wedding day to do my hair for me. We drove up to Logan because Salt Lake Temple was closed for cleaning. That was when reception centers were a new phenomenon. We had ours at "The Reception Center" on 45th south. My parents didn’t have anything extra, and I was working, so I paid for all of it myself. After we got back to Salt Lake after the ceremony Ve and I went shopping for bridesmaid gifts. It was a wonderful day. I had no idea at the time just how much an unhappy camper my mother-in-law was about the whole thing. I think she’s finally figured out that Ve really did have a choice in the matter, and that maybe it wasn’t such a bad choice, after all.
Veon and Clyda loaned us their station wagon to take to Yellowstone Park for our honeymoon. When we got back I was balancing my checkbook, after all the last minute rush of details for the wedding, and I discovered that I was a hundred dollars overdrawn! That was a lot more money then than it is now. I had never had a problem managing my money before that, and was panicked about it. I called Daddy, who deposited that amount into my account. So, as it turned out, they really did help pay for my wedding! Sonja
I was graduating from BYU. I got up early, had my hair done, went to class, then met my father and mother at 2:00 and went to the Salt Lake Temple. Veon moved into our home with us for a week and then we went down to Bryce Canyon and worked for a summer for my father's business.
